How to Recognize Bulimia

  • Bulimia is typically characterized by a recurring cycle of binging and purging, occurring on average at least once a week for a duration of three months.
  • Binges are defined as consuming a larger amount of food than what most people would eat during a similar timeframe and circumstances. These episodes are also marked by a lack of control over one’s eating.
  • Purging is considered any recurrent inappropriate behaviors that are used to attempt to control weight gain from the binge episode, and can include fasting, self-induced vomiting, obsessive exercise, and the use of laxatives and diuretics. An individual with bulimia’s self-evaluation can be unduly influenced by body, weight, shape, and size.
  • This disorder typically presents during later adolescence/early adulthood, and just as with anorexia, can affect individuals of all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, and sexual orientation, and cannot be defined by simply looking at a person.

FAQs About Our Bulimia Treatment Centers in Madison and Neenah, WI

There is not one treatment modality that has been shown to be superior in the treatment of bulimia. Several different modalities have risen to prominence over the years and most treatment centers use one or a combination of the following: ERP (Exposure and Response Prevent), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). The pillars of treatment for bulimia are founded on therapeutic work, nutritional work, and medical and psychiatric support as needed. Treatment delivered by a multidisciplinary team comprised of therapists, dietitians, and physicians is most effective at addressing all the components of bulimia.

The first goals of treatment for bulimia are for the team to establish rapport and trust with the client and to interrupt eating disorder behaviors as much as possible. These goals in turn help the client exit the behavior cycle and begin the healing journey.

Length of treatment depends on the severity of the disorder, the level of care needed to treat it, and how the client responds to treatment. It can vary from a few weeks of intensive outpatient care to a more extended process, including medical stabilization, step-down to residential treatment, and then several months of outpatient treatment. As with many illnesses, the earlier bulimia is recognized and treated, the fewer the complications, and the shorter the likely treatment course.

At Inner Haven Wellness, we provide intensive outpatient programming delivered by an expert compassionate multidisciplinary team. Our approach, tailored to meet each individual's unique needs, is rooted in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with a strong focus on skill development and consistent practice

The treatment of bulimia is complex and requires management of a number of psychiatric and medical complications and co-morbidities, such as depression, anxiety, gastroparesis, and osteoporosis. Treatment of each complication or co-morbidity according to the latest evidence-based medical literature is key in providing these clients the best possible care and outcome.

There isn’t a preferred psychological treatment for bulimia. Treatment is tailored to the unique needs of each client and draws from multiple therapeutic modalities. At Inner Haven Wellness, we have found the most success for our clients in drawing from ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy).
