How to Recognize Binge Eating Disorder

  • Binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by recurring episodes of binge eating and a sense of loss of control over one’s eating during these episodes.
  • Binges are defined as consuming a larger amount of food than what most people would eat during a similar timeframe and circumstances.
  • Unlike other eating disorders, there is typically no purging behavior following a binge episode.
  • BED affects more individuals than any other eating disorder, and it can affect anyone regardless of age or stage of life.

There is not one treatment modality that has been shown to be superior in the treatment of binge eating disorder. Several different modalities have risen to prominence over the years and most treatment centers use one or a combination of the following: ERP (Exposure and Response Prevent), ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). The pillars of treatment for binge eating disorder are founded on therapeutic work, nutritional work, and medical and psychiatric support as needed. Treatment delivered by a multidisciplinary team comprised of therapists, dietitians, and physicians is most effective at addressing all the components of binge eating disorder.

The first goals of treatment for binge eating disorder are for the team to establish rapport and trust with the client and to interrupt eating disorder behaviors as much as possible. These goals in turn help the client exit the behavior cycle and begin the healing journey.

There isn't a preferred psychological treatment for binge eating disorder. Treatment is tailored to the unique needs of each client and draws from multiple therapeutic modalities. At Inner Haven Wellness, we have found the most success for our clients in drawing from ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy).

Length of treatment depends on the severity of the disorder, the level of care needed to treat it, and how the client responds to treatment. It can vary from a few weeks of intensive outpatient care to a more extended process, including medical stabilization, step-down to residential treatment, and then several months of outpatient treatment. As with many illnesses, the earlier binge eating disorder is recognized and treated, the fewer the complications, and the shorter the likely treatment course.

The treatment of binge eating disorder is complex and requires management of a number of psychiatric and medical complications and co-morbidities such as depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and joint pain. Treatment of each complication or co-morbidity according to the latest evidence-based medical literature is key in providing these clients the best possible care and outcome.
