What Happens After a Referral to Inner Haven Wellness?
Making a referral for eating disorder treatment can feel like a big step — for providers, clients, parents, and loved ones. Whether you are an outpatient therapist, dietitian, physician, school counselor, or a family member looking for support, it is normal to wonder what happens next.
At Inner Haven Wellness, our goal is to make the referral and admissions process feel clear, supportive, and as non-intimidating as possible. We understand that eating disorder treatment decisions often happen during moments of stress, uncertainty, or urgency. Our admissions team is here to help guide each person and family through the process with compassion, transparency, and care.
Inner Haven Wellness provides specialized eating disorder treatment for adolescents and adults through Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care, with in-person programs in Madison, Milwaukee, and Neenah, Wisconsin, as well as virtual options in Wisconsin and Missouri.
Step 1: Reach Out to Our Admissions Team
The first step is simple: contact Inner Haven Wellness by phone or email.
A referral can come directly from a provider, a parent, a loved one, or the individual seeking care. You do not need to have everything figured out before calling. In fact, many people reach out because they are unsure what level of support is needed.
Our admissions team can help answer questions such as:
- Is PHP or IOP the right fit?
- Does my client or loved one need a higher level of eating disorder care?
- What information is needed to begin the admissions process?
- Is treatment available in Madison, Neenah, Milwaukee or virtually?
- What insurance plans are accepted?
- How soon can someone begin care?
For providers, our team can also help clarify what clinical information may be helpful to share, such as current symptoms, medical concerns, recent weight changes, eating disorder behaviors, co-occurring anxiety or depression, and current outpatient support.
Step 2: Insurance Verification and Financial Guidance
After the initial call, our team can complete a verification of insurance benefits. This helps clients and families better understand their coverage before beginning treatment.
Inner Haven Wellness is in-network with most major national and regional insurance plans, and our team works to provide as much clarity as possible around benefits, authorization requirements, and potential out-of-pocket costs.
Insurance can feel overwhelming, especially when a family is already worried about eating disorder symptoms or next steps in care. Our admissions team helps make this part of the process easier by walking through the information in plain language and answering questions along the way. Inner Haven also offers flexible payment plans, Care Credit, and financial assistance options for any out of pocket costs.
Step 3: Clinical Assessment and Level of Care Guidance
Once basic information is gathered, the next step is a complimentary clinical assessment. This helps determine whether Inner Haven’s PHP or IOP level of care is clinically appropriate.
The assessment may explore areas such as:
- Eating disorder symptoms and behaviors
- Medical and nutritional concerns
- Mood, anxiety, trauma, or other co-occurring mental health symptoms
- Current outpatient providers and support system
- School, work, and family needs
- Safety concerns or barriers to care
- Previous treatment history
- Goals for recovery
This assessment is not about judgment. It is about understanding the full picture so the team can recommend the most appropriate next step.
For some individuals, PHP may be recommended because they need more structured support during the day, including supported meals, therapy, nutrition care, and medical oversight. For others, IOP may provide the right balance of structure and flexibility while still allowing time for school, work, family, or outpatient commitments.
If Inner Haven is not the right fit at that moment, our team can help guide families and providers toward appropriate resources.
Step 4: Admissions Planning and Scheduling
If PHP or IOP is recommended and the individual is ready to move forward, the admissions team will help coordinate a start date and prepare the client and family for what to expect.
This may include:
- Confirming the recommended program and schedule
- Reviewing required paperwork
- Coordinating with outpatient providers
- Discussing what to bring on the first day
- Answering family or caregiver questions
- Providing orientation information
- Helping reduce uncertainty before treatment begins
For adolescents, family involvement is an important part of the process. Parents and caregivers are supported in understanding the program structure, expectations, and how they can participate in their loved one’s recovery.
Step 5: Beginning Treatment at Inner Haven
Once admitted, each client begins working with a multidisciplinary team that may include therapists, registered dietitians, medical providers, psychiatric support, nurses, and group facilitators.
Inner Haven’s treatment approach is evidence-based, relational, and individualized. Programming may include individual therapy, group therapy, nutrition therapy, supported meals and snacks, family therapy, medical monitoring, psychiatry, experiential work, mindful movement, and skill-building.
Our programs are grounded in approaches such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based practices that support emotional regulation, values-based recovery, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and long-term healing.
Recovery is not just about reducing eating disorder behaviors. It is also about helping each person reconnect with their values, strengthen relationships, rebuild trust with food and body, and develop a life that feels more grounded and sustainable.
What Providers Can Expect After Making a Referral
We know that strong communication with referral partners is essential. When outpatient providers refer to Inner Haven, our goal is to support collaboration whenever appropriate and permitted by the client or family.
Providers may be involved in:
- Sharing clinical history or referral concerns
- Coordinating around level of care recommendations
- Supporting continuity before admission
- Participating in care collaboration during treatment
- Planning for step-down and discharge support
Inner Haven values the role of outpatient therapists, dietitians, physicians, schools, and community partners. A referral to PHP or IOP does not mean a provider is being replaced. Instead, intensive treatment can offer additional structure while helping clients build skills that support their continued work with their outpatient team.
What Families Can Expect After Reaching Out
Families often contact Inner Haven during a time of fear or confusion. You may know something is wrong, but not know how serious it is. You may have been told your child needs more support, but feel unsure what PHP or IOP actually means. You may be worried about school, meals, insurance, or whether your loved one will agree to treatment.
Our admissions team is here to help you slow down, ask questions, and understand your options.
You do not have to know the exact diagnosis or level of care before calling. If you are concerned about restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, compulsive exercise, significant weight changes, intense fear of weight gain, rigid food rules, meal avoidance, or increasing anxiety around food and body image, reaching out is an appropriate next step.
Early support matters. You do not need to wait until things feel “bad enough” to ask for help.
When to Consider PHP or IOP for Eating Disorder Treatment
A higher level of care may be helpful when outpatient therapy or nutrition counseling is no longer enough to support progress. Common signs may include:
- Eating disorder behaviors are increasing or becoming more rigid
- Meals and snacks feel difficult to complete without support
- Medical or nutritional concerns are emerging
- Anxiety, depression, or emotional distress are interfering with daily life
- School, work, relationships, or family life are being disrupted
- Outpatient providers are recommending more structure
- The person is stuck in a cycle of relapse or short-term improvement followed by decline
PHP and IOP can provide a bridge between traditional outpatient care and more intensive levels of treatment. These programs offer structure, accountability, and clinical support while helping clients practice recovery skills in real life.
