How to Recognize ARFID

  • ARFID is characterized by extreme restriction in food intake, often due to a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, fear of choking, sensory sensitivity to certain textures or tastes, or a lack of interest in eating. Unlike anorexia nervosa, individuals with ARFID do not have concerns about their body image or weight.
  • Individuals with ARFID may experience significant nutritional deficiencies and unhealthy weight loss due to the limited variety of foods they consume.
  • ARFID can also be accompanied by sensory processing issues, where specific tastes, smells, or textures of foods may be intolerable to the person, leading to refusal to eat.
  • It is important to know that ARFID is not a choice, and the behaviors associated with it are typically driven by anxiety or sensory discomfort rather than a desire to control body weight.
  • ARFID can affect individuals of all ages, but it is often recognized in childhood. However, adults may also struggle with ARFID without a formal diagnosis.

FAQs About Our ARFID Treatment Centers In Madison, Milwaukee, and Neenah, WI

The most effective treatment for ARFID is a multidisciplinary approach that addresses both the medical and psychological aspects of the disorder. Evidence-based treatments, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are often used to help clients gradually expand their range of safe foods and reduce fear or anxiety related to eating. At Inner Haven Wellness, our team of medical professionals, therapists, and dietitians collaborates to create a personalized treatment plan designed to meet each client's unique needs. This comprehensive care ensures clients receive support for nutritional restoration, behavioral change, and emotional well-being.

The initial goals of ARFID treatment focus on stabilizing physical health and addressing immediate nutritional deficiencies. At the same time, we work to build trust between the client and the treatment team, ensuring they feel safe and supported. Early stages of treatment also aim to identify specific food-related fears, sensory sensitivities, or other contributing factors that impact eating. Gradual exposure to new foods, paired with strategies to reduce anxiety and improve mealtime experiences, sets the foundation for long-term recovery.

While both ARFID and anorexia involve restrictive eating, the underlying motivations and treatment approaches often differ. ARFID typically stems from sensory sensitivities, fear of adverse reactions to food, or a lack of interest in eating, rather than concerns about body image or weight. Treatment for ARFID focuses on addressing these unique challenges, such as overcoming food aversions or anxiety, and gradually broadening the diet in a safe and manageable way. On the other hand, treatment for anorexia often involves addressing distorted thoughts about body image and weight, along with reestablishing a healthy relationship with food. At Inner Haven Wellness, our tailored treatment programs reflect these important distinctions to meet the individual needs of each client.

The length of treatment for ARFID varies depending on the individual’s specific challenges, medical needs, and progress. For some clients, significant improvements can be seen within a few months, while others may benefit from longer-term care to address deeply ingrained food aversions or anxieties. At Inner Haven Wellness, we tailor the duration of treatment to the unique needs of each client, focusing on steady, sustainable progress rather than rushing the process. Our team is dedicated to supporting clients every step of the way, ensuring they develop the skills and confidence needed to maintain recovery long after treatment concludes.

At Inner Haven Wellness, we provide both in-person and virtual intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programming delivered by an expert compassionate multidisciplinary team. Our approach, tailored to meet each individual's unique needs, is rooted in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with a strong focus on skill development and consistent practice.

If you are concerned about a loved one, contact Inner Haven Wellness at 608-982-0980 for a confidential consultation.
