How to Recognize Anorexia

  • Anorexia is typically characterized by weight loss, difficulties maintaining an appropriate body weight for age (and other genetic considerations), as well as significant distress around body image.
  • Individuals with anorexia can also engage in binging and purging-type behaviors which include but aren’t limited to self-induced vomiting, use of diuretics and laxatives, and compulsive exercise.
  • Individuals with anorexia generally present with a restriction of intake and a rigidity around food consumption.
  • It’s important to know that anorexia cannot be diagnosed by simply looking at a person and their body type–individuals in all body types can be diagnosed with anorexia.
  • Contrary to some media and societal portrayals, anorexia affects individuals of all ages, races, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations.

FAQs About Our Anorexia Disorder Treatment Centers In Madison and Neenah, WI

There is not one treatment modality that has been shown to be superior in the treatment of anorexia. Several different modalities have risen to prominence over the years and most treatment centers use one or a combination of the following: ERP (Exposure and Response Prevent), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). The pillars of treatment for anorexia are founded on therapeutic work, nutritional work, and medical and psychiatric support as needed. Treatment delivered by a multidisciplinary team comprised of therapists, dietitians, and physicians is most effective at addressing all the components of anorexia.

The first goals of treatment for anorexia are for the team to establish rapport and trust with the client and to interrupt eating disorder behaviors as much as possible. These goals in turn help the client exit the behavior cycle and begin the healing journey.

Length of treatment depends on the severity of the disorder, the level of care needed to treat it, and how the client responds to treatment. It can vary from a few weeks of intensive outpatient care to a more extended process, including medical stabilization, step-down to residential treatment, and then several months of outpatient treatment. As with many illnesses, the earlier anorexia is recognized and treated, the fewer the complications, and the shorter the likely treatment course.

The treatment of anorexia is complex and requires management of a number of psychiatric and medical complications and co-morbidities, such as depression, anxiety, hypokalemia, and osteoporosis. Treatment of each complication or co-morbidity according to the latest evidence-based medical literature is key in providing these clients the best possible care and outcome.
